Trunk or treating has become a beloved Halloween tradition. Often hosted by community groups and churches, it's a fun, family-friendly event. Because it's a safer alternative to going door-to-door, more cities and community groups are sponsoring these events every year. Some prefer the traditional way to trick or treat but I think it's a fantastic way to bring the community together to celebrate.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Participating in a trunk-or-treat is easy! Most events ask you to register your vehicle ahead of time. All you need to do is decorate your car trunk, bring an unopened bag of candy, and get ready for the fun. Don't forget to wear a costume yourself!
RULES TO REMEMBER
Every event has its own guidelines, so it's a good idea to check them beforehand. Children will go from car trunk to car trunk to get their candy, rather than going door to door. Some events might require a ticket for entry, and you'll almost always need to bring an unopened bag of candy to share with all the little trick-or-treaters.
TRUNK-OR-TREAT IDEAS
Now for the fun part: decorating! Your car can become anything you imagine. The best trunk or treat ideas are often the simplest ones that let your creativity shine.
FUN & SPOOKY THEMES
- A Pirate's Treasure Chest: Use a brown blanket to cover the trunk and arrange gold coins, plastic jewels, and skeleton props. You can even have a treasure map for kids to follow.
- The Spooky Haunted House: Drape black fabric over your trunk to create a haunted entrance. Add spiderwebs, faux tombstones, and maybe a motion-activated skeleton.
- The Circus: Use red and white striped fabric for a circus tent look. Set out circus props like a plastic top hat or juggling balls. A clown costume is optional!
DIY DECORATING IDEAS
- Cardboard Creations: Use old cardboard boxes to build a castle, a ghost, or a giant monster mouth that kids can reach into for candy.
- Balloon Monsters: Create a friendly monster by blowing up balloons and taping them together with some googly eyes. It’s a cheap and easy way to add a pop of color.
- Painted Pumpkins: Decorate a few pumpkins with spooky or silly faces. These can be used to line your trunk and create a simple, classic Halloween vibe.
- Paper Pumpkins: Get out the scissors and paper make budget-friendly Pumpkins and paper ghosts.
